Panama City, Panama (CNN)Pope Francis has taken another shot
at wall-building politicians, telling thousands of Catholics
in Panama gathered for World Youth Day that "builders of
walls sow fear" and "divide people."
"We know that the father of lies, the devil, prefers a community
divided and bickering," Francis told a crowd of tens of
thousands of youth Thursday night at a seaside park in Panama
City.
"This is the criteria to divide people: The builders of
bridges and the builders of walls, those builders of walls sow
fear and look to divide people. What do you want to be?"
When the crowd replied "builders of bridges," Francis
replied, "You learned well. I like that."
The Pope's remarks seemed to be a clear reference to President
Donald Trump's proposal to build a wall along the US-Mexico border.
Trump's demand for $5.7 billion for the wall has led to a partial
government shutdown for 34 days and counting.
On Wednesday, after Trump tweeted a new slogan, "Build a
wall and crime will fall," a journalist on the papal plane
asked Pope Francis about Trump's proposal. The Pope said such
measures are driven by fear. "It is the fear that makes

Memorial in Abu Dhabi on Monday, and confirms how, "God
is with those who seek peace".

Meeting took place within the context of the Global Conference
of Human Fraternity, currently underway in Abu Dhabi. The Conference
has brought together hundreds of religious leaders and scholars.
It is dedicated to examining interfaith dialogue, religious freedom,
combatting extremism, and promoting peace.
All of these themes were present in Pope Francis' discourse,
which he delivered at the Founder's Memorial, before some of
the highest authorities in the United Arab Emirates, and members
of the Diplomatic Corps.

ROME — February 3, 2019 - Pope Francis has arrived in the
United Arab Emirates Sunday ahead of an interfaith conference
he will attend as part of a two-day visit to UAE, the first-ever
trip by a pope to the Arabian Peninsula, the birthplace of Islam.
- The head of the Catholic Church has
made dialogue with Islam one of the cornerstones of his papacy.
Since he became pope in 2013, he has visited several countries
with large Muslim populations.

by the emirates' Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan.
- On Monday, the pope’s day will
be entirely dedicated to inter-religious dialogue. He will first
visit a mosque, one of the biggest in the world, where he will
meet privately with the Council of Elders, an organization based
in Abu Dhabi, which aims to promote peace and tolerance among
Islamic communities. The Council of Elders is organizing a Human
Fraternity Meeting and conference where the pope will speak,
along with Sheik Ashamed el-Tayeb, the grand imam of Egypt's
Al-Azhar, the 1,000 year old seat of Sunni Islam. Muslims, Christians,
and hundreds of Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist and other faith leaders
are expected to be in attendance.

of our earth” to woo other religions into uniting with the
Catholic church in order to fulfill his dream of a united global

- In 2015 Pope Francis addressed the UN
General Assembly in New York shortly before member states unanimously
adopted Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development
Goals.
- Fast forward to 2019 and the Pope was
in the Vatican on Friday where he greeted participants taking
part in a two day international conference entitled, “Religions
and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Listening to the
cry of the earth and of the poor”.

by telling those gathered that, “when we speak of sustainability,
we cannot overlook how important it is to include and to listen
to all voices, especially those usually excluded from this type
of discussion, such as the voices of the poor, migrants, indigenous

Development Goals, the Pope said, “were a great step forward
for global dialogue, marking a vitally “new and universal
solidarity”. But he noted, “for too long, the conventional
idea of development has been almost entirely limited to economic

progress is assessed only in terms of material growth, on account

that many of you will be completely shocked. Most parents assume
that they are sending their children to college to get prepared
for their future careers, but the truth is that a lot of our
major colleges and universities have become little more than
indoctrination centers for progressive thought. Our college students
are literally being systematically trained to be socialists,
and it is working. According to a brand new Harris Poll that
was just released, 37.2 percent of all Americans “prefer
living in a socialist country”. But for Millennials and
Generation Z combined, that figure is 49.6 percent. That means
that essentially half of our young adults want to be socialists,
and that has enormous implications for the future of our society.

Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives
on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent
religions and spiritualities of the world. After I returned home
from all the Ash Wednesday liturgies last night, I collapsed
on the couch, picked up the remote, and one of the first things
I saw on TV was this. It's not that uncommon to see prominent
figures showing their ashes on Ash Wednesday, but seeing a broadcaster
of Cuomo's stature doing it on CNN was a jolt.
It was also a blessing.
It is good to see a fellow sinner professing his desire for repentance.
Some commenters on social media were less impressed. There was
a lot of tsk-tsking and finger-wagging and righteous remarks
along the lines of "He has a lot to atone for."
I will just add this, a comment I left on one post, that should
serve (I hope) as a reminder to us all, because we so easily
forget:
It's Lent. Last Sunday's Gospel set the stage for all of us for
these 40 days. We all need to do better. And that begins here
and now.
I think we can all agree that for a broadcaster of Cuomo's stature,
wearing ashes on prime time television was something unabashedly
bold. (So was his verbal sparring with a congressman several
months back who blithely misused the phrase "Immaculate
Conception," prompting Cuomo to publicly school him on what
that actually means.) Let us be grateful that in this day and
age, considering the state of the Church, he is not ashamed to
declare he is one of us and that he is also a work in progress.

ROME - Watching disturbing developments in politics, entertainment,
the economy and even the Catholic Church - especially in light
of a recent summit in Rome focusing on the sexual abuse of children
by clergy - many people in the 21st century could be forgiven
for thinking that the idea of robots taking over the world
might not be so bad. But a conference organized by the Vatican’s
Pontifical Academy for Life on Monday mixed enthusiasm with caution
regarding recent developments in artificial intelligence,
emphasizing the importance of placing the human person at the
center.
- “An appeal for a new alliance of
humanism and technology” was at the heart of the introductory
speech by Italian Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, the head of the
academy. His speech opened the Feb. 25-26 workshop on “Robo
Ethics: Humans, Machines and Health,” which attracted
some of the most pioneering engineers, developers and scientists,
Catholic and not, to discuss the ever-growing field of Artificial
Intelligence.
- Among the speakers was Hiroshi Ishiguro,
a Japanese innovator in the field of androids and interactive
robotics. He is globally known for his hyper-realistic robots
capable of sustaining 10 to 15-minute conversations with humans.
“I want to create a human-robot symbiotic society,”
Ishiguro said, adding that his hope is to create a compassionate
robot that could easily pass the “Turing test,” which
means it’s capable of fooling a human into thinking that
it’s not a machine.
